Formation of ECOCAMPING e.V.

In 1996, the Lake Constance Foundation ventured into the then brand new topic of "environmental protection on campsites."

We gained our first experience on the Campingdorf Horn campsite in Gaienhofen. Then the Klausenhorn campsite on Lake Constance was erected in our first pilot project: a modern toilet block was built with roof greening, solar panels, and the latest energy- and water-saving technology. An attractive recycling island was built. Cars were only allowed onto the campsite for the erection and dismantling of tents and caravans. Free handcarts and bicycles were offered as emission- and noise-free alternatives.

The project was a success and more followed: In the summer of 1999, together with the Lake Constance Foundation, ECOCAMPING began its first international project with 14 campsites on Lake Constance and six more on Lake Maggiore. With funding from the EU, within two years an environmental and quality system for campsites was developed, based on the European EMAS management system.

Out of this initially temporary project, the ECOCAMPING association was finally founded in 2002 - as a common and ongoing sustainability initiative of the camping industry and environmental organisations.

Then followed several other projects at a regional level - first in Baden-Württemberg, then in Bavaria and eventually in almost all German regions and in South Tyrol. Meanwhile, the ECOCAMPING network has reached European dimensions.
